Managing skeletal related events resulting from bone metastases.

چکیده
Pain is one of themost common symptomsmanaged in a palliative setting, and over half of all metastatic cancers will be associated with pain originating from bone metastases. Breast, lung, and prostate cancers account for about 80% of all bone metastases. Management of bone pain is especially important in patients with prostate or breast cancer as these patients may survive for many years with metastatic disease. Primary care physicians are well suited to provide palliative care as their long term relationships with patients and their families can result in a more satisfactory experience for all involved. All too often the management of bone pain from cancer metastases stops at opioids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Although specialists administer treatments such as radiation therapy and radiopharmaceuticals, family physicians must be aware of their role if they are to make appropriate referrals.

Pharmacologic management of bone-related complications and bone metastases in postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer
There is a high risk for bone loss and skeletal-related events, including bone metastases, in postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. Both the disease itself and its therapeutic treatments can negatively impact bone, resulting in decreases in bone mineral density and increases in bone loss. These negative effects on the bone can significantly impact morbidity and mort...
متن کاملComparison of the efficacy and safety of denosumab versus bisphosphonates in breast cancer and bone metastases treatment: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in females worldwide. Patients with breast cancer and bone metastases may experience increased osteoclast activity, resulting in local bone destruction and skeletal complications, including pain, hypercalcemia and skeletal-related events. Intravenous bisphosphonates (BPs) are the standard treatment administered to patients with breast cancer and b...
متن کاملThe use of bisphosphonates in patients with breast cancer.
BACKGROUND Bone is the most common site of breast cancer metastases. Skeletal metastases may be associated with harmful and painful events such as fractures, spinal cord compression, and hypercalcemia. By inhibiting osteoclasts and bone resorption, bisphosphonates can interrupt the process of bone destruction and decrease the risk of skeletal complications. METHODS A review of the literature ...
متن کاملUpdate on the pharmacological prevention of skeletal-related events in cancer patients.
Metastases to the bone are a frequent complication of advanced cancer. Bone metastases have been linked to skeletal-related events, which is the composite endpoint used in clinical trials evaluating therapy to minimize these complications. This article discusses bisphosphonates, which are the historical standard for the prevention of skeletal-related events in patients with metastases from soli...

We conducted a large, multicenter, retrospective survey aimed to explore the impact of tumor bone involvement in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer.Data on clinical-pathology, skeletal outcomes and bone-directed therapies for 661 deceased patients with evidence of bone metastasis were collected and statistically analyzed. Bone metastases were evident at diagnosis in 57.5% of patients. In the remaining ...
